Relationship of Type to Substrate
(Paper, Leather Imprinting, Personalization of Bags, Hat Bands, Debossing, Blind Stamp, Book Binding, Monogramming)
The substrates above serve as a background for the impression of the type and can either add or detract from the effectiveness of the printing, depending upon its texture, finish, quality and color.
For example a supple leather with a yielding surface permits a firm impression of the type and this tends to enrich the appearance of the letters and results in a sharpness of print and strong visibility of the type. A type face that is a book weight for a name works well here as my a nice bold letters for monogramming initials.
On a more textured surface it would be ill advised to use a thin type face. Remember, the type must overcome the surface it is being printed on for the type to have strong visibility.
In choosing type for Personalization, Monogramming, Hand Stamped goods, Debossing, Blind Stamping there is considerable variations in the tones and styles of the different type faces in use. It is possible to select types with consideration for there greatest effectiveness on the specific finishes and textures on encounters in imprinting and Hot Stamping.
