Type

In this form of printing, impressions of the reading matter, monogram, personalization on the printed substrate (paper, leather, faux leather, etc.) are made by means of type.  Type characters are made backwards, or right-to-left, so that they will appear in right position in the resulting impression.

Type is made in single characters on individual bodies and is supplied to the printer in fonts or complete assortments of a given style and size.  Feel free to Email us to see a showing of a particular font.  This way you can see approximately what comes in the font (set) you are considering.

Individual letters are picked out of the type box and are assembled and spaced into a line in the type holder or composing stick.  After printing the type is returned to the type box or case for use on the next job.

On the left of this page you can see lines of pre-set words or lines of type or slugs.  We offer Ludlow type setting to set lines of pre-set type.  Each line of type matter appears on a single bar of metal or slug.  When the slug is no longer needed or wears out  the slugs are returned for recycling.
